Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I am a psychoanalyst in private practice.
When I’m away from work I enjoy playing with my little ones, hiking, listening to music, dancing, and seeing live theatre with my main squeeze.
Why Did you start CrossFit and how long have you been doing it?
I first fell in love with Crossfit back in 2009 and quickly became pregnant within that first year. These two things are unrelated but upon reflection I’m thinking maybe not. Maybe I felt really good and strong and my body was like “yeah lets do this baby thing!” I worked out until about 6 months preggo and then decided to go back to the confines of the gym in my building because pregnancy and working felt challenging enough at the time I guess. 🙂
Initially I wanted to try it because I love a challenge and there was one close to me in LIC at the time. I wanted to see what all the hype was about. Also- I wanted to get in better shape. I had a previous career as an actor which placed a ton of pressure on me keeping in shape. Post graduate school in 2009 I had not been focusing on that for a while.
What i enjoy most about Crossfit is the community and being in it together! I love the challenge of the workouts for sure but they wouldn’t be the same for me doing them alone. I am motivated in the presence of others and feed off that vibe.
What’s your favorite type of WOD?
I enjoy the chippers. I think it’s because I have never been a successful “sprinter”. I always wished I could have been but all good things in my life have taken time. My career (s) have taken time, my relationships have taken time, and I get some kind of satisfaction from the “chipping away” at something factor. Gives me time to get a second wind too!
What is your favorite movement? Which movement keeps you on the couch when you see the WOD?
Favorite movement: I had a hard time with this question as though I can’t like something if I’m not good at it. Ok I guess Back Squat.
I hate snatches. Partially cause I’m not proficient and also because I am thinking WAY too much when attempting this movement. I need to get out of my own way.
What is your ideal cheat meal?
Ok I took way to long thinking about this. It involves really good wine, steak (not only grilled but the kind they finish off with a butter glaze), veggies and maybe pizza too or better yet some appetizer with cheese in it. I wouldn’t have to track anything either!
What advice would you give someone looking to start CrossFit?
Be open to the experience and check your ego at the door! Don’t expect to be good at everything, be ready to sweat, and get ready to meet yourself in a whole new way.
